Title: PHILIPPINE LITERATURE
No. of Units: 3 units
Course Description: An introduction to Philippine Literature and literary scholarship that provides an overview of the historical development of Philippine literature from early period to contemporary period as exemplified by selected literary texts written at different periods, movements and issues. This course also introduces the students to the oral and printed literatures expressed in different regional and vernacular languages.
Objectives: This course is designed to develop students’ ability to read, comprehend and participate in building a national identity through the study, understanding and appreciation of the historical development of Philippine Literature. Specifically, the students are expected to:
- describe the uniqueness and richness of Philippine literature in different historical periods;
- explain and describe the importance of literature and its role in nation-building;
- identify the different forms, types and elements of the different literary genres;
- analyzed sample representative works by Filipinos from various regions in terms of their human, cultural, and social significance;
- foster appreciation and love for literature through critical reading using different literary theories;
- develop and strengthen worthwhile values through reading literary masterpieces ;
- produce and present a short film featuring a chosen literary masterpiece in a particular literary period.;
- submit a portfolio from a compilation of various outputs based on the different periods in Philippine literature; and
- demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of literature to real life.
